Iconic Basketball Player Jerry West, Whose Silhouette Was Used as NBA Logo, Dies at 86

—

Jerry West, one of the most iconic figures in NBA history, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 86. The Los Angeles Clippers announced his death, noting that he died peacefully with his wife, Karen, by his side.

West was a standout guard for the Los Angeles Lakers during the 1960s and early 1970s and redefined the shooting guard position with his exceptional skill and clutch performances. His silhouette was used as the basis for the NBA’s iconic logo in 1969.

Born on May 28, 1938, West played his entire 14-year NBA career with the Lakers from 1960 to 1974. He was a 14-time NBA All-Star, the league’s scoring champion in 1970, and won his sole NBA title in 1972. Known as “Mr. Clutch” for his ability to deliver in crucial moments, West was awarded the NBA Finals MVP in 1969 despite his team losing to the Boston Celtics.

West’s influence extended beyond his playing days. After retiring in 1974, he coached the Lakers from 1976 to 1979. He then transitioned into an executive role, where he was instrumental in building the Lakers’ dominant Showtime teams of the 1980s, securing five championships. His executive acumen continued to shine as he contributed to championship wins for the Lakers in 2000 and the Golden State Warriors in 2015 and 2017. Most recently, he served as an executive with the Los Angeles Clippers.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver remarked, “Jerry West was a basketball genius and a defining figure in our league for more than 60 years.” The Basketball Hall of Fame, which inducted West in 1980, lauded his profound impact on the game, matched only by his character and integrity.

West’s career achievements are monumental. He averaged 27.0 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 6.7 assists per game, becoming the third player in league history to score over 25,000 points. His contributions to basketball were recognized in 2022 when he was named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team.

Jerry West leaves behind a legacy of excellence, inspiring generations of players, including legends like Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant, who cited him as an influence. His death marks the end of an era for basketball, but his contributions to the game will be remembered forever.
