IBB at 85: Tinubu Says Babangida Left Indelible Marks on Nigeria

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated former military Head of State, retired Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, on his 85th birthday, describing him as an outstanding Nigerian leader whose legacy remains significant.

Tinubu said Babangida’s distinguished military career culminated in his emergence as Nigeria’s leader following the 1985 coup.

The President conveyed his message in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga, on Monday in Abuja.

Tinubu said Babangida had shaped Nigeria in significant ways, leaving lasting marks on the country’s political, economic and geographical development.

“Like him or not, former President Babangida impacted Nigeria in ways no other leader has. His eight-year reign left enduring marks on our political, economic, and geographic landscape,” Tinubu said.

According to the President, Babangida expanded the economy, developed critical infrastructure and established agencies and institutions that continued to serve national interests.

“But for his foresight, wisdom, and sense of equity and fairness, many states in the federation might not exist today,” he said.

Tinubu said Babangida’s contributions to national development had secured his place in Nigeria’s history.

He also acknowledged the former military leader’s continued participation in national discourse despite his retirement from public life.

“Even in retirement, living a quiet life at my Minna Hilltop residence in Niger State, General Babangida continues to offer valuable counsel and guidance to the nation.

“His advice and wise counsel remain an inspiration to younger generations,” the President said.

Tinubu wished the former military leader continued good health, strength and many more years of service to the nation.

“I wish you continued grace, good health, and renewed strength. May Almighty Allah keep you with us for many more years to come,” he said.
