Former Speaker of the House of Representative, Yakubu Dogara has emphasized the need for Federal lawmakers to make public their monthly earnings.
Speaking during a Legislative Open Week tagged; Celebrating 25 Years of Unbroken Legislature In Nigeria, currently holding in Abuja on Wednesday 3 July, Dogara who explained that Members of the House of Representatives need to clear their names from the public perception of earning a very large monthly salaries, added that he was earning four hundred thousand naira as his monthly salary and twenty five million naira as monthly allowance.
While calling for probity and openness in financial accountability of public funds, the former speaker also urged the state governors to do more in that regard.
Dogara who said that expectations from constituents are too high on their representatives due to widening poverty, also maintained that democracy is very expensive for Nigeria to practice hence the need to look for an alternative system of governance.
