Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has clarified that the recent position of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Governors’ Forum was directed at APC members who support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election but refuse to back other APC candidates.
Sule said such members were engaging in “eye-service” by claiming to support Tinubu while working against other candidates of the ruling party.
The governor made the clarification while speaking in an interview with TVC News monitored by The News Chronicle.
According to him, the APC Governors’ position was that party members should support APC candidates “from top-down.”
“I stand for all members of the APC should vote for only APC candidates and support them. That is the position,” Sule said.
He, however, distinguished between APC members and politicians who are not members of the party but have pledged support for Tinubu’s 2027 presidential bid.
Sule specifically referenced FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, as well as the governors of Osun and Abia, noting that they had indicated their support for Tinubu despite not being APC members.
“For people like that, you just say thank you very much and move on,” he said.
The Nasarawa governor, however, said he had a “BIG problem” with APC members who support Tinubu while refusing to support other candidates of the party.
“Don’t misunderstand me: I have a problem with it if you are a member of the APC,” Sule said. “I have BIG problem with it; in fact, I have a HUGE problem with it.”
He alleged that some of those involved were politicians who lost APC primaries and subsequently decided to work against the party’s candidates while still claiming to support Tinubu.
Sule cited Kwara, Nasarawa and Benue as states where he said similar situations had emerged.
“So people will go, contest under APC, lose under APC, and now say that, ‘Alright, we will support the President but not any other person.’ That is the one I have a problem with,” he added.
