“I had to defend my team, it was self-defense” – Bright Osayi

Super Eagles and Fenerbahçe defender, Bright Osayi-Samuel, has stated his reason for the first time since the brawl that occurred during the Turkish Super Lig game between Fenerbahçe and Trabzonspor last week Sunday. 

Bright Osayi was seen in a video attacking an unknown pitch invader as a defense for his vulnerable teammates following his team’s 2-3 victory at Trabzonspor.

The defender asserted that the invaders had dangerous weapons on them with which they invaded the turf with, so a defense was vital. He further revealed that some of his teammates were injured in the process, while some were left in great fear:

“The fans attacked the team, some had weapons on them, I had to defend my team, it was in self-defense, that’s what happened.”

“My teammates suffered cuts and bruises, some were scared, several others also joined me to try to defend the team.”

He declared the away victory has enormous and a revenge after they lost at home to their opponent:

“We found a way to win and avenge our only loss in the league to the same team after they beat us at our home in the first round,” he said.

The 26 years old is expected to maintain his starting lineup for the Supers Eagles who take on Mali tonight by 10pm as a preparation for the 2025 AFCON qualifiers. He was involved in the first friendly game (playing all 90 minutes) against Ghana during the first FIFA International Friendly game in Stade de Marrakech, Morocco.
