Hurricane Hidaya Hits Kenya, Tanzania, and Burundi: Death Toll Rises, Evacuations Ordered

—

Cyclone Hidaya is expected to make landfall in Tanzania on Friday, with the potential to cause heavy rainfall, large waves, and strong winds in coastal areas.

So far, the devastating floods have claimed hundreds of lives, with over 210 reported dead, and tens of thousands displaced. In response to the hazard, the Kenyan government has ordered mandatory evacuations for residents near dams and water reservoirs in anticipation of the cyclone.

In Tanzania, at least 155 people have been killed by the flooding and landslides. Hence, the arrival of Cyclone Hidaya adds to fears of further disruption.

The United Nations also gave reports of heavy rains causing casualties and displacement in Burundi

Scientists explain that the heavy rains are worsened by the El Nino weather pattern, leading to increased precipitation and flooding in the East African region.

Both the Kenyan and Tanzanian governments have issued warnings and evacuation orders in anticipation of Cyclone Hidaya. On Thursday, a bulletin was released by the Kenyan Interior Ministry ordering mandatory evacuations have been ordered for residents near dams and water reservoirs, with efforts to ensure the safety of vulnerable populations. Residents were also warned about flash floods and strong winds.

The floods have also affected Kenya’s tourism sector, with tourists stranded in the Maasai Mara wildlife reserve due to flooding on Wednesday.

Heavy rains are expected in Kenya’s capital Nairobi over the next three days.
