The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) says it recorded 276 cases of human rights violations in Adamawa State between January and June 2026.
The NHRC State Coordinator, Grace Mamza, disclosed this in an interview on Wednesday in Yola.
Mamza said the commission had made significant progress in addressing the reported cases, noting that 84 had been resolved, 12 remained pending, nine were referred to relevant authorities, while investigations and interventions were ongoing in the remaining cases.
She listed the reported violations to include denial of inheritance rights, forced marriage, family abandonment, threats to life, domestic violence, unlawful arrest and detention.
Other complaints, according to her, involved non-payment of benefits and entitlements, defilement, denial of the right to health, child custody disputes, inhuman and degrading treatment, violations of the right to dignity of the human person, and denial of fair hearing.
Mamza said the commission had intensified public enlightenment campaigns to curb human rights abuses across the state.
According to her, the NHRC has carried out sensitisation and awareness programmes in schools, communities and places of worship to educate residents on their rights and responsibilities.
“The general public is advised to treat one another with dignity and respect, not just because the law says so, but because humanity demands it,” she said.
The state coordinator also urged victims of human rights abuses to report their cases to the commission for appropriate intervention instead of resorting to self-help.
She assured residents that the NHRC remained committed to protecting fundamental human rights and ensuring that victims receive justice through lawful channels.
