How Whatsapp Banned 71 Indian Accounts In 2023

WhatsApp, the popular messaging platform, made headlines as it announced a significant crackdown on accounts in India.

November 2023 saw WhatsApp imposing bans on over 71 lakh accounts within the country.

Notably, approximately 19.54 lakh accounts were preemptively banned by WhatsApp before any reports surfaced, showcasing the platform’s proactive stance on tackling misuse.

This information was detailed in India’s monthly report under the IT Rules, 2021, unveiled on January 1, 2024.

The report shed light on the platform’s stringent measures to maintain a secure environment for users.

In response to citizens’ concerns, WhatsApp received 8,841 grievances during the same month.

The platform took action on six reports and complied with eight reports from the Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC).

The GAC, instituted by the Indian government, plays a crucial role in addressing and resolving issues related to social media platforms.

WhatsApp emphasized its commitment to user safety by implementing detection measures at multiple stages, covering registration, messaging, and response mechanisms to negative feedback.

A dedicated team of analysts evaluates reported accounts, determining whether stringent actions such as permanent bans are necessary.

Throughout the year, WhatsApp introduced various security features aimed at fortifying user privacy and security across platforms.

These features include end-to-end encryption, mute unknown numbers, and chat lock, reinforcing its commitment to providing a private messaging service amidst evolving challenges

of digital communication.
