The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has announced plans to introduce legislation aimed at regulating and applying Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Nigeria.
This move, unveiled during the matriculation ceremony of the National Institute For Legislative And Democratic Studies (NILDS)-University of Benin (UNIBEN) Post Graduate Programmes and HND Programme in Abuja, underscores Nigeria’s commitment to staying abreast of global technological advancements.
Speaker Abbas emphasized the importance of AI in human capital development and highlighted the need for a legal framework to ensure its responsible application.
The initiative aims to achieve a balanced labour-capital ratio in Nigeria’s development process, with the Speaker urging NILDS to provide intellectual support and research opportunities for the adoption of AI technologies.
Abbas also stressed the crucial role of education in nation-building, drawing from his legislative experience to underscore the significance of capacity building.
“Many developed countries have advanced their educational systems and continue to explore opportunities in AI. In order to key into this emerging development, the 10th National Assembly will strive to provide a legal framework for regulating the adoption of AI in our country.
“”In my years as a legislator, I have seen how the capacity-building and knowledge-deepening of the support system around legislators can help them to enhance legislative processes and outcomes,” he added.
