House Leader Doguwa granted N500 million bail amidst controversies

A Federal High Court sitting in Kano presided over by Justice Muhammad Nasir Yunus on Monday granted the sum of N500m bail to Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado Doguwa and two reliable sureties in like sum.

It could be recalled that Doguwa was remanded in Goron Dutse, Kano, Correctional Centre (prison) over alleged electoral violence during last Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly elections.

He is standing trial on the allegations of criminal offences bordering on “Criminal Conspiracy, illegal possession of firearms, culpable homicide and breach of public peace.”

Allegedly, Doguwa was accused of sponsoring his thugs to carry out political violence.

He however, denied wrongdoings and pleaded not guilty when he was arraigned before Kano Magistrate court 54.

The lawmaker’s legal counsel, Nuraini Jimoh (SAN), on Monday prayed the Federal High Court, Kano to admit the defendant on bail arguing that his client is presumed to be innocent pursuant to the provision of section 35 sub 6 of Constitution of Federal of Nigeria (1999 as amended).

Ruling on the application, the presiding judge, Justice Nasir-Yunusa, granted N500 million bail to the defendant with 2 reliable sureties.

The sureties include a first-class emir and senior officer in civil service.

The court ordered Doguwa to drop his international passport to Court Registry pending the trial.

The Court also restrained him from attending gubernatorial or state assembly elections.
