Honourable Alex Ikwechegh has publicly apologized following allegations that he assaulted a cab driver delivering a package to his home.
The incident, which took place on Sunday, sparked outrage on social media, with many calling for justice and urging the police to take action.
In response to the backlash, Ikwechegh took to his social media platforms to express his remorse for his behavior, emphasizing that it was out of character for him. Here’s what he had to say in his official statement:

I want to address a recent incident involving Citizen Stephen Abuwatseya, an e-hailing cab driver. What began as a misunderstanding unfortunately escalated, leading to remarks and actions that I deeply regret.
These do not reflect the values I strive to uphold as a citizen and a representative of the people.
I sincerely apologize for my words and actions during this incident. I understand the distress and frustration I have caused Citizen Abuwatseya, his family, and the public. As a public servant, I recognize the weight of my role and how my behavior can affect others.
While I am human and make mistakes, I take full responsibility for my actions. Citizen Abuwatseya and I have already discussed alternative ways to resolve this issue, and I am committed to following through on our respectful agreement.
I also want to extend my heartfelt apologies to the Inspector General of Police for any unintended disrespect my comments may have caused towards him, his office, and the entire police force. I hold great respect for the Nigerian Police and their commitment to maintaining law and order.
Additionally, I apologize to my colleagues in the National Assembly and the leadership for any damage this incident may have caused to our collective reputation. I know that my actions reflect not just on myself but also on the esteemed institution we represent and the trust the public places in us.
Ikwechegh confirmed that he and Abuwatseya are working together to resolve the issue amicably. He also extended apologies to the Inspector General of Police for any disrespect his comments may have inadvertently caused, as well as to his colleagues in the National Assembly for the negative impact on their reputation.
He emphasized the importance of restraint and self-control, vowing to learn from this experience to grow as both a citizen and a representative.
