Herdsmen Attack Triggers Youth Protests in Benue Community

—

A group of aggrieved youths have barricaded the University Community road, On Monday morning, at 7 am.
This obstruction has caused significant disruptions for travelers heading to Gbajimba in the Guma Local Government Area, Benue state.
These youths have remained steadfast in their protest, insisting that they will not remove the blockade until the authorities address their pressing security concerns.
As of the latest reports, the road remains blocked, with the youths preventing the passage of both vehicles and motorcycles.
This blockade has led to considerable inconvenience and frustration among commuters and local residents who rely on this route for their daily activities.
In a separate and more violent incident, members of the Benue State House of Assembly came under attack by gunmen believed to be part of a herdsmen militia.
This attack took place on Thursday night at around 10 pm along Kilometer 16 on the Makurdi/Gboko Road.
The Assembly members were returning from a public hearing held in the Katsina-Ala Local Government Area when they were ambushed by the armed assailants.
According to reports, the attackers opened fire on the Assembly members without warning, leading to a chaotic and dangerous situation.
The motives behind the attack are not yet fully understood, but it is part of a broader pattern of violence attributed to herdsmen militia in the region.
These violent encounters have raised significant concerns about the safety and security of public officials and ordinary citizens alike.
Hon Elias Audu, the Chairman of the House Committee on Information and Orientation, confirmed the incident.
He expressed deep concern over the attack and emphasized the urgent need for enhanced security measures to protect public officials and citizens.
The attack on the Assembly members highlights the growing insecurity in the region and underscores the critical need for government intervention to address the escalating violence.
The events of this week, both the road blockade by the youths and the violent attack on the Assembly members, have brought to the forefront the pressing security challenges facing the Guma Local Government Area and the broader Benue State.
The youth blockade is a direct response to these security concerns, as they demand immediate action from the authorities to ensure their safety.
Meanwhile, the attack on the Assembly members serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by armed groups operating in the region.
In response to these incidents, there have been calls for the government to take decisive action to restore peace and security.
Local leaders and community members are urging the authorities to engage in dialogue with the protesting youths and address their grievances.
At the same time, there is a strong demand for increased security presence and proactive measures to prevent further attacks by armed militias.
The situation remains tense and uncertain, with the road blockade continuing to cause significant disruption and the aftermath of the attack on the Assembly members still unfolding.
The authorities are under increasing pressure to find solutions that will address both the immediate security concerns and the underlying issues contributing to the unrest in the region.
