He Must Go- Prof. Ibrahim Demands Amupitan’s Resignation Over Neutrality Concerns

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Chairman of the Editorial Board of Premium Times, Prof. Jibo Ibrahim, has called for the resignation of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, over concerns about his neutrality and non-partisanship.

Speaking on the podcast Conversations with Prof. Jideofor Adibe, professor Ibrahim said it was unfortunate that questions were already being raised about the impartiality of the electoral umpire, warning that such perceptions could erode public confidence in the commission.

The Political Science professor maintained that the head of Nigeria’s electoral body must not only be neutral but must also be seen to be completely free from partisan influence.

He cited concerns over the INEC chairman’s past associations, including controversy linked to his Twitter account, stressing that such issues raise serious doubts about his integrity and suitability for the role.

“I feel in this context that he should resign for having failed the test of neutrality and non-partisanship.And if he doesn’t resign, the President that appointed him should come to the conclusion that he is not a good candidate,” Professor Ibrahim said.

He added that if President Bola Tinubu chooses to retain him, Nigerians would ultimately be the ones to judge whether he is fit to oversee credible elections and uphold democratic integrity.
