Hard Work Alone Won’t Secure European Move, Austria-Based Nigerian Footballer

—

Austria-based Nigerian footballer John Ejoor has said that while hard work and consistency are essential for success, they do not, on their own, guarantee a move to European football.

Ejoor, who plays for ATSV Wolfsberg in Austria, made the remarks in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos.

According to him, football careers are shaped by a combination of hard work, timing, opportunity and circumstances beyond a player’s control.

“I believe in hard work, but I don’t think hard work alone takes you there. It helps you remain there when the opportunity comes,” he said.

Reflecting on his own journey, Ejoor said he did not regard himself as the most talented among his peers but was fortunate to secure an opportunity to play abroad.

“I wouldn’t say I was the best player among my peers, but I got the opportunity. Many players are just as talented or even better but never got the same chance,” he said.

He advised aspiring footballers to remain committed to improving their game while recognising that success in football often depends on opportunities that cannot be predicted.

Ejoor stressed that consistency becomes even more important after signing a professional contract, as players must continually prove their value to remain in the team.

“When you get there, consistency is what keeps you there. Clubs expect you to fight for your place every day,” he said.

He cited Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen as an example of a player whose relentless work ethic has helped him remain among the world’s elite.

“People admire Osimhen because of the way he fights for every ball. That attitude helps him remain at the highest level,” he said.

Despite the emphasis on hard work, Ejoor maintained that many gifted footballers never receive the opportunities their talent deserves.

“There are many players who work just as hard, or even harder, but never get the same opportunity. Football is full of factors beyond talent alone,” he said.

He encouraged young players to view every stage of their football journey as an opportunity for personal growth, regardless of whether they ultimately become professionals.

“Every phase of your journey should teach you patience, discipline, consistency or resilience. Those lessons will still be valuable even outside football,” he said.

Ejoor also urged aspiring footballers not to lose hope when opportunities fail to materialise despite their efforts.

“When things don’t happen the way you expect, don’t assume something is wrong with you. Keep learning, keep improving and stay mentally strong because football, like life, is unpredictable,” he said.
