Guzamala Chairman’s Supporters Reject Alleged Gun Threat Claim in Borno

The family members, friends, colleagues, students, supporters and well-wishers of the Executive Chairman of Guzamala Local Government Area, Hon. Umar Lawan Sheriff, have rejected allegations circulating on social media that the council chairman threatened an individual with a gun.
In a press release dated September 8, 2026 obtained by The News Chronicle, the group described the allegation as unsubstantiated, stating that no credible or independently verified evidence had been presented to support the claim.
They urged members of the public and media practitioners to exercise caution and verify information before sharing or treating unverified allegations as facts.
The group expressed concern that circulating such claims without proper verification or allowing the accused an opportunity to respond could negatively affect his reputation and public standing.
They also warned that individuals who publish or circulate false or defamatory statements could face legal consequences, stressing the importance of accuracy, fairness and due diligence in public communication.
According to the statement, Hon. Umar Lawan Sheriff remains focused on his responsibilities and committed to peace, responsible leadership and the development of Guzamala Local Government Area.
The group called for public discussions surrounding the matter to be guided by credible evidence and due process rather than speculation or unverified reports.
