Gunmen Kill Popular Awka Town Crier ‘Azia Nwosu,’ Another in Separate Attacks

A popular public announcer and commentator in Awka, Anambra State, Isaac Nwosu, also known as “Azia Nwosu,” was on Sunday shot dead by gunmen alongside another unidentified person in separate attacks in the state capital.

The gunmen reportedly carried out the attacks at different locations in Awka, killing Nwosu and another yet-to-be-identified victim.

Confirming the incident, the spokesman for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the command had condemned in the strongest terms the gun attacks carried out by unidentified gunmen in Awka on Sunday, August 30, 2026, which resulted in the deaths of two persons.

Ikenga said the command had consequently intensified its ongoing manhunt for the perpetrators and appealed to members of the public for support and cooperation in apprehending the suspects and bringing them to justice.

According to him, preliminary information gathered by the command indicated that three unidentified persons travelling in a silver-coloured Toyota Corolla, whose registration number was yet to be ascertained, reportedly shot two persons at separate locations within Awka.

He said that upon receiving distress calls, police operatives immediately mobilised patrol teams to the affected areas and commenced efforts to track down the assailants.

Ikenga said the operatives recovered the bodies of the victims along Capital City Road, Amaenyi, and S.M. Okeke Street, Amaikwo, Awka, respectively.

According to him, the victims were subsequently taken to a hospital, where medical personnel confirmed them dead.

He said while one of the victims was yet to be identified, the second victim had been identified as Isaac Nwosu, popularly known as “Azia.”

The police spokesman added that operatives also recovered ₦7,550 in cash, one Moniepoint ATM card and a pair of slippers from the scenes of the attacks.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, strongly condemned the killings, describing the incident as dastardly, unacceptable and a direct affront to the peace and security of the state.

The commissioner directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, for discreet and comprehensive investigation.

He also ordered security operatives to intensify patrols, surveillance, and intelligence gathering across Awka and adjoining communities to track down the perpetrators and prevent further attacks.

The command called on community leaders, residents, motorists, business owners and other members of the public who may have witnessed the incidents or possess credible information about the suspects, their movements or the vehicle used in the attacks to come forward and assist the police.

The police assured members of the public that such information would be treated with utmost confidentiality.

The Anambra State Police Command reiterated that community partnership remained critical to effective policing and urged residents to provide timely and credible information that could assist in apprehending the perpetrators and preventing further attacks in the state.
