The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Henry Okoye, confirmed the incident, stating that security operatives and a Joint Task Force team, headed by the Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, and Commander 34 Artillery Brigade, are currently inspecting the crime scene for evidence that could possibly help in nabbing the perpetrators of the attack.

The police in Imo State had, on Saturday, confirmed the kidnap and subsequent killing of the traditional ruler of the Otulu Autonomous Community in Ezinihitte Mbaise LGA.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the security operatives, who were on a routine check, were shot dead instantly by the gunmen who opened fire on them. NAN also reported that a similar incident occurred on September 19th, 2023, at the neighboring Aboh, Mbaise LGA, where yet-to-be-arrested gunmen killed at least five security personnel.

An eyewitness who preferred anonymity revealed that the other passerby gunned down by the gunmen was a victim of stray bullets.
