Anambra State Police command on Monday, confirmed the killing of operatives of a local vigilante unit in Oba, Idemili North Local Government Area of the State, in a nightclub identified as Porsche Nightclub.
The spokesperson of the state police command, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed this to TNC correspondent in a phone call, when he sought to confirm the killings.
It was gathered that the gunmen had invaded the nightclub in an attempt to abduct the owner.
A video currently trending on the Anambra social media space, showed many people who were shot dead at a nightclub.
Though there are no further details of who carried out the attacks on Sunday night, a source, Chukwuemeka Ezefunamba said the gunmen came to kidnap the owner of the club, but were resisted by security men attached to the club.
He said; “As a result of the resistance, the gunmen started shooting sporadically, killing many people in the process.
“They also beheaded one of the security men who resisted them from taking the owner of the night club.”
Confirming the incident, the State Police spokesperson, Ikenga said: “Yes, the incident happened. Our men were alerted and they quickly moved to the scene of the incident, but the gunmen had already fled.
“Our men have recovered the bodies of the vigilante operatives who were fatally wounded, while others sustained various degrees of injury.
“We have also fully deployed our men to Oba, and the operation is ongoing. So far, no arrest has been made,” he said.
Oba, a growing suburban town in Anambra is close to Onitsha, and has a high number of hospitality facilities, with a burgeoning nightlife.
Sunday night’s attack on Porsche Nightclub is not the first in the town.
A popular native doctor, Akwa Okuko had months back been kidnapped by gunmen in his hotel and was later released after payment of ransom.
A source in Oba put the number of those killed at Porsche Nightclub at seven, while one of the security operatives was beheaded, and another had his foot cut off and made away with by the invading gunmen.
