Group Flays Abia Govt over Alleged Fraudulent Denial of Retired Teachers’ Entitlements

A rights group, the Centre for Human Rights Advocacy and Wholesome Society (CEHRAWS) has expressed deep concern over recent allegations brought forth by the Abia Retired Teachers’ Forum (ART) regarding the denial of entitlements to retired teachers from the years 2017 to 2023.

It was alleged that numerous retired educators have been unjustly denied their rightful entitlements despite years of dedicated service to the education sector.

These entitlements represent monies deducted from their salaries throughout their service years, intended to be released on retirement as a welfare support package to help cushion the effects of retirement.

According to a statement on Wednesday, by the Executive Director of CEHRAWS, Mr Chuka Okoye, the retirees, who had diligently served their communities, allege facing extortion and false promises from the Abia branch of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) while seeking the release of said entitlements.

While condemning the development, the CEHRAWS  boss said any form of exploitation or mistreatment of retirees, particularly those who have dedicated their lives to shaping the future of our nation through education, will not be tolerated.

“It is unacceptable that these individuals, who have contributed so much to society, are now being denied their rightful entitlements in their golden years.

“Allegations suggest that such callous acts have even led to the deaths of some retirees,” the group said.

Okoye called on the Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr Alex Otti, and relevant stakeholders to save the lives of the retirees by compelling the Abia NUT to immediately address these allegations and fulfill the requests made by the ART forum without further delay.

He said; “Furthermore, we urge the union to fully cooperate with the proposed investigations that will soon be conducted by relevant authorities, including the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

“CEHRAWS stands in solidarity with the retired teachers of Abia State and will continue to advocate for their rights and well-being. We will closely monitor the situation and work in partnership with civil society organizations and anti-graft agencies to ensure justice is served.

“We implore the Abia NUT to act swiftly and responsibly in rectifying this matter, as failure to do so will result in further legal action and consequences. The dignity and welfare of our retired teachers must be upheld and respected at all times.”
