Antoine Griezmann delivered an emotional apology to Atletico Madrid supporters after playing his final home match for the club, admitting his move to Barcelona years ago was a mistake.
Speaking to supporters at the Metropolitano Stadium following Atletico’s victory over Girona, the French forward expressed gratitude for their backing throughout his two tenure at the club. Griezmann admitted before Barcelona that he had undervalued his bond with the Atletico fans.
The News Chronicle reports that the 35-year-old expressed gratitude to everyone for their affection, even as doubts swirled over his 2019 resignation. Even if he failed to give the club a Champions League or La Liga championship, he claimed the link he re-established with supporters was more crucial than medals.
Diego Simeone, Atletico’s coach, praised Griezmann as among the best players in the club’s history. The striker replied that Simeone had helped him become a world-class player and form his career.
Griezmann is expected to leave Spain for a new chapter in Major League Soccer after ending his Atletico journey as the club’s all time leading scorer.
