Former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, General Yakubu Gowon has called for truce between President Goodluck Jonathan and the Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi.
He made the peace call at a centenary symposium organised to mark the 100th anniversary of Port Harcourt.
While addressing the people, the former President called for a handshake between President Goodluck Jonathan who was represented by his Special Adviser on Documentation and Strategy, Mr. Oronto Douglas, and Governor Rotimi Amaechi.
He said the handshake was the first step towards settling whatever misunderstanding they have.
After the warm handshake and embrace, the former Head of State assured that he would ensure that the rift between the President and Governor Amaechi is resolved amicably.
“I call this the centenary handshake. It was to be between the President and the Governor and not with a representative. The handshake will be repeated in Abuja. I call it the centenary handshake,” he said.
General Gowon added that he was saddened by the crisis in Rivers State and called for peace among the warring partners.
