Governor Zulum Sets Up Committee to Investigate Alau Dam Collapse and Resulting Flooding

The Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has established a committee to investigate the recent collapse of the Alau Dam, which led to extensive flooding in Maiduguri and nearby local government areas.

The incident, which occurred on September 10, caused widespread devastation, displacing nearly 2 million people and destroying numerous homes and properties.

The Alau Dam, originally built between 1984 and 1986, was designed to supply water for both domestic use and irrigation to the residents of Maiduguri and its surrounding communities.

The sudden collapse of a section of the dam has raised significant concerns about the dam’s structural integrity and the potential risk it poses to local communities.

In a statement released on Friday night, the Secretary to the Borno State Government, Alhaji Bukar Tijani, announced the formation of the committee.

He explained that the group’s main responsibility would be to thoroughly investigate the root cause of the dam’s collapse and the subsequent flooding.

The committee members, according to the statement, will work to assess the extent of the damage, determine the factors that led to the disaster, and recommend steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The committee will be officially inaugurated Today, Saturday at 2:00 pm in the council chamber of the Government House in Maiduguri.
