Governor Douye Diri’s ‘Nudity’ In South Africa!

—

Penultimate week, the Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, was in the news internationally for some scandalous sexual reasons. A top South African lawmaker, Zanele Sifuba, the Speaker of South Africa’s African National Congress (ANC) Free State legislature, had accused him of being behind the release of her nude video online! The SA politician never minced words in naming her nemesis pointing accusing fingers toward his direction. She confessed that they were lovers! An executive Governor of a flood-ravaged oil-rich state in Nigeria dating a political amazon in Mandela-land? Wonders shall never end in politics Nigeriana!

According to her: “This is the picture of the man who leaked our video. He is my lover whom I trusted. A Nigerian Official, by name Douye Diri” she said, posting the picture of the governor alongside and continued: “I trusted him with my life, but he betrayed me. Please share for the whole world to know the kind of man he is.”

But the revelation following the uploading of her nude video online cannot be said to be surprising to many Nigerians at home and abroad. Our politicians are ‘swimming’ in petro-Dollars so they can do whatever they want with impunity. In Nigeria money is almost everything! Forget about the God syndrome in our national life. Money, for the majority of our compatriots, is more important and more valuable than God!

Now the crucial questions: where did Gov. Diri date Ms Sifuba? In London, Yenagoa, Johanesbourg or Cape Town? Who leaked her sex tape? The venue of their amorous outings may not be important here. Yet, it goes to tell how flippant and wasteful our politicians could be with state resources entrusted in their hands.

Again, has the sexual relationship between Gov. Diri and Ms Sifuba waned or was she jilted? Are they still on good terms? Or their sexual relationship has soured? What possibly led to the exposure of the woman’s grey private parts in public online? Or were politicians in SA behind it all? Are Nigerians based in South Africa involved in the criminal endeavour? Accusing fingers are being pointed to a Nigerian con-artist trying to extort money from lawmaker Sifuba and when she failed to shell out the imposed fees the criminal decided to act.

Bayelsa has had Governors worse than the incumbent. Remember the big ‘Alams’? The late Diepreye Alameiseigha as Governor was ‘busy’ looting as much as possible while the gubernatorial party lasted. Niger Delta region has had Governors who loot and engage in sophisticated prolixity. If you want to learn a new thing or two on prose or grammar then get in touch with Governor Ben Ayade of Cross Rivers State! If you want to know how ‘insane’ a Governor could be when provoked then visit Port Harcourt and meet with Nyesom Wike.

The former Governor of another oil-rich State, Delta, James Ibori, had deposited millions of Dollars abroad, proceeds of high-wire corruption! Both the late ‘Alams’ and Ibori spent some time in the British jails for graft-related offenses. Today, while Alams is six feet below Ibori is still grandstanding in Delta state politics. He still sees and fancies himself as the last surviving godfather in Delta State.

No shame or contrition whatsoever! Ever since he was freed by the British judicial system and he returned to Nigeria Ibori has been playing godfather politics imitating Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in Lagos. While it is arguable that a Governor in Nigeria can never serve his people without stealing their fiscal resources, democracy dividends and development suffer when scarce resources are invested in unproductive schemes or ventures.

It is unbelievable that Gov. Diri could have released the South African legislator’s nudity to the public. Somebody else must have done that! Whether the Governor ordered it or not is open to questions. The Governor could defend himself by saying that he never knew the SA woman from Adam! Even if that is a lie he is bound to continue defending himself if only to placate his wife or mitigate the damage to his reputation. Adultery is still a moral crime before God and man!

Politicians in general and Governors in particular in Nigeria are very good at playing sex games, sometimes well beyond our boundaries. Having amassed great fortune through high-wire corruption they enjoy their lives to the fullest while the guber party lasts, leaving the rest of us to continue ‘wailing’ and gnashing our teeth over lack of basic amenities and services.

They junket around the globe by first-class flight tickets with a retinue of aides, mistresses and concubines! With a junketing President in the Aso Villa they try to outdo one another on useless foreign trips.

You have those hooked to some bibulous binge like the former Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano. And others attached to sexual exploits. Sexual predators abound in the broken system marked by unmitigated mediocrity! Yet they try very hard to hide their true colours even masking their kleptocratic indulgence.

Governor Diri presents a public image of a dour responsible chief executive, one who does not involve himself in follies or hubris, but in Nigeria we dare say that there is no responsible chief executive anywhere. All of them have ‘sinned’ and come short of divine glory!

The South African politician named her lover as “Douye Diri”. Or do we take it here that there is a mistaken identity problem or mix-up somewhere? Two or three people can bear the same name. Just like the late Abba Kyari that worked under President Buhari as the Chief of Staff and the incarcerated ‘super-cop’ Abba Kyari the criminal con-man/drug baron. The woman never mentioned Governor Diri even though the name she mentioned sounded very much like that of the Governor.

Between the randy Governor and his lawmaker-lover in SA the truth ought to be exposed in the interest of both parties. Using a third party (the Niger/Delta militants) to threaten SaharaReporters that exposed the story or the irrepressible Publisher, Comrade Sowore, or Deji Adeyanju is not the best way to go about it all. Governor Diri must come clean on the allegation.

While open threats and intimidation cannot settle the issue of the day we believe it is in the best interest of the Governor to address the weighty allegation and prove his innocence. Otherwise, we would conclude that he must have resolved to do ‘damage’ to the woman for one misdemeanour or ‘love crime’ or the other. The ball remains in his court!

He must tell Bayelsans in particular and Nigerians in general how and why he sought love across the border. Why and how he became a ‘lover-boy’ at his age! (Even Felix Lebarty, the famous lover-boy/musician, is no longer called lover-boy as his age advanced). And how and why his responsibility as the Chief Executive of a state permitted him the time to engage in romantic fantasies outside our shores.

The abhorrent spectacle watched online by millions, Zanele Sifuba’s nudity, may be Governor Diri’s nudity as well! He must clarify issues bothering on betrayal of trust and love in this regard.

His graveyard silence in the face of the weighty allegation from his mistress in Madiba-land cannot be considered ‘golden’ anymore. His exposed ‘nudity’ must be covered by nothing but the truth, the whole truth!

Improve welfare of Nigerian Teachers

I was and I am a teacher. I was a Parents Teachers Association hired teacher at Oba Akinbiyi High School (II), Mokola, Ibadan in 1997. Apart from that stint, I also taught briefly at a private secondary school during my National Youth Service at Asaba, Delta State as well as at another private secondary school at Akowonjo area of Lagos state around 2001 / 2002. My late father, Deacon Isaac Oyeniyi Ojo taught for about 40 years across several primary schools in Oyo and Osun sates and retired as a headmaster in 1995. At present, I don’t just teach but train people across various democratic institutions namely election management bodies (INEC and SIECs), political parties, media, national and state legislative assemblies, police, and civil society organisations. Information gleaned from the website of UNESCO says “World Teachers’ Day is held annually on 5 October to celebrate all teachers around the globe. It commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which sets benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers, and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions. In 2026, the Day marks the 60th anniversary of the Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.” In Nigeria, this year's celebration focused on five interconnected pillars: innovation, mobility, Artificial Intelligence, inclusion, and professional excellence. The Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, announced that the selection process for the 2026 World Teachers' Day awards was digitised to promote transparency, accountability, and efficiency. The celebration includes a symposium, a march-past featuring state flags and cultural attire, and the recognition of 14 awardees, including the first, second, and third best teachers receiving prestigious car gifts, while the best Federal Unity College received a bus. Other prizes include laptops. In commemoration of the World Teachers Day, Dr. Akin Ayeni and I were guests on a breakfast programme on Ekiti 91.5 FM, Ado Ekiti last Monday where we dissected the plights of Nigerian teachers and proffered solutions to them. The host was Ademola Adeleke. I enumerated some of the plights of Nigerian teachers to include: Low wages, insecurity, quackery, inadequate classrooms, lecture theatres, libraries and laboratories, high turnover of staff especially in private schools, high workloads, disrespects from parents, students and even government. I made a proverb on the programme. Elo ni teacher ngba, ti o ntuto s’owo ka’wo osu (meaning, how much does a teacher earn that he or she needs to use saliva to count salary). This was a random joke even among teachers when they used to collect their salary in cash. This day, they receive their wages via online money transfer. The proverb however is meant to drive home the paltry nature of the salaries and wages of teachers cum lecturers. I recall the sticker produced by Academic Staff Union of Universities many years ago which has the inscription “My take home pay cannot take me home”. That’s very instructive. On issue of insecurity, according to Daily Trust of October 1, 2022, “The registrar of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, Professor Josiah Ajiboye, said attacks on schools by insurgents have claimed the lives of more than 2,295 teachers in the North East between 2009 and 2022.” The PUNCH in its June 5, 2026 online edition reported that “An estimated 603 students and teachers have been kidnapped in seven mass abductions across schools in Nigeria between March 2024 and May 2026 under President Bola Tinubu, despite the N145bn Safe Schools Initiative.” Recall that on May 15, 2026, a total of 46 persons – seven teachers and 39 students – were abducted from Community High School Ahoro-Esinele and Yawota Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. Thankfully, most of them were rescued though two teachers were murdered by the bandits.  Michael Oyedokun, was reportedly beheaded, while John Olaleye, was shot dead during the attack. It is noteworthy that some university lecturers have also been abducted in the past. The heavy workloads and low wages have resulted into brain drain and high turnover of teaching staff across our academic institutions. Many education graduates don’t want to teach. The lecturers in tertiary institutions are leaving in droves for greener pasters abroad. Many teachers today take the job as a last resort when better options are not available. Many of the private schools recruit untrained teachers. They side step the federal government policy of having every teacher certified by Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria. Recall that the TRCN regulates the teaching profession in Nigeria by setting standards, accrediting teacher education programmes, registering qualified teachers, and enforcing professional ethics.  It establishes national minimum standards for teacher education and monitors teacher training institutions, including Colleges of Education, university faculties, polytechnic schools of education, and the National Teachers Institute. Unlike in the 20th century when teachers in Nigeria were widely respected and seen as mini-God, in contemporary times, there have been situation where pupils and students openly abuse teachers, bully them and even beat them up. Some irresponsible parents have even gone to school to harass and molest teachers for caning or meting out corporal punishments to their wards and children. Thus, many teachers now work in an atmosphere of fear. Mrs. Comfort Fasunwon is a multiple award-winning teacher in Ondo State, here is an excerpt from what she wrote on her Facebook wall in commemoration of the 2026 World Teachers Day “To my fellow teachers, today.  Teaching is not always easy. There are days when the workload is heavy, resources may be limited, and the results of our efforts may not be immediately visible. Yet we continue to show up, teach, encourage, correct, inspire and believe in our students. Sometimes, the greatest reward of a teacher is not a certificate or trophy. It is seeing a child who once struggled begin to understand. It is watching a student grow in confidence. It is meeting a former student years later and hearing the words, “Ma or sir, you made a difference in my life.” My plead to government at all level as well as private schools’ owners is to ensure that their schools are well resourced and staff welfare is made paramount. Professionalism should be their watchwords. Teachers’ rewards shouldn’t be in heaven; a foretaste of that should be here on earth. Best wishes to fellow teachers and nation builders. Remember the popular song that says “Anyone who hates teachers will homeschool his or her  child” I.G: @jideojong
