Google’s Tips to Protect Yourself from Online Scams

Google, with its vast user base, faces a continuous battle against cybercriminals targeting users with various scams.

The tech giant has shared useful advice to help individuals safeguard their digital identities and avoid falling victim to these fraudulent schemes.

One significant concern is the rise of deepfake videos and audios, which often feature public figures.

While these materials may appear convincing, they are usually artificially created using advanced AI, and are commonly used to deceive people into participating in scams, especially during high-profile events like elections or investment promotions.

Spotting distorted facial expressions is an easy way to detect such fake content.

Another red flag to watch for are investment offers that promise quick returns, particularly in cryptocurrencies.

These offers are often scams, as legitimate investment opportunities never guarantee such outcomes.

Scammers are also mimicking well-known apps and websites to steal personal information.

These fake sites may look identical to trusted ones but could have small discrepancies such as misspelled URLs or unusual logos.

To avoid these, users should only download apps from verified sources and double-check URLs for authenticity.

In more advanced schemes, fraudsters may use landing page cloaking to deceive users into entering their credentials by showing them different content than what appears to search engines.

Checking the URL and using browser protection can help identify such fraudulent sites.

Additionally, scammers exploit major events, like sports or concerts, by creating fake event pages to sell counterfeit tickets, merchandise, or collect donations.

Before making any online purchase, it’s essential to verify the legitimacy of the website.

By staying alert and following these tips, users can protect themselves from falling prey to the increasing threat of online scams.
