Google Play Launches $1 Million Fund for African Game Developers

—

Google Play has launched a $1 million Indie Games Fund to support emerging game developers across 32 African countries with equity-free funding, technical assistance, and expert mentorship.

The initiative, announced on Friday, is designed to strengthen Africa’s rapidly growing gaming ecosystem by helping independent studios scale their businesses, reach global audiences and showcase African stories through gaming.

Google Play’s Managing Director for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Ben Wilson, said the fund reflects the company’s commitment to unlocking the continent’s creative potential despite longstanding funding challenges facing many developers.

“Africa’s creative talent has built a vibrant game development community, but limited access to capital continues to hold back many promising studios,” Wilson said.

“By bringing this fund to the continent, we are reinforcing our commitment to helping local developers unlock their potential and share uniquely African stories with players around the world.”

According to him, selected studios will receive equity-free grants ranging from $50,000 to $200,000, alongside hands-on mentorship from industry experts and technical support to improve game performance, visibility and market reach.

Applications are now open to independently owned game studios registered in any of the 32 eligible African countries, including Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana and South Africa.

To qualify, applicants must have no more than 50 employees and must have already released at least one game on mobile, PC or console platforms.

Successful applicants will also be required to publish their games on Google Play and participate on a non-exclusive basis in the Google Play Pass subscription program for two years.

Applications close on July 31, while the 10 successful studios selected for the program will be announced in September.
