Google Announces Umoja Project to Link Africa and Australia with New Fiber Optic Cable

—

Google has unveiled plans for the Umoja project, a groundbreaking initiative to construct a new fiber optic cable connecting Africa directly to Australia.
Starting from Kenya, the cable will span through Uganda, Rwanda, South Africa, and other nations before crossing the Indian Ocean to Australia.
In partnership with Liquid Technologies, Google aims to bolster digital infrastructure across the continent, offering access points for broader network utilization.
The project has garnered support from leaders in Africa and Australia, who foresee substantial economic and digital inclusion benefits. Named after the Swahili word for unity, Umoja represents a pivotal advancement in global digital connectivity.
This initiative is part of Google’s broader commitment to invest $1 billion in Africa by 2026, reinforcing its dedication to enhancing the region’s digital economy.
