Gombe’s governor has issued a state pardon to 26 inmates

—

Gombe State Governor, Inuwa Yahaya, took a significant step to mark the beginning of 2024 by offering unconditional pardon to 26 inmates.

This generous decision was shared with the public during a State-wide broadcast on New Year’s Day.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya, in his address, mentioned that this compassionate move was made in accordance with the recommendations of the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy.

Out of the total 39 convicted inmates considered, 26 have been granted complete pardon, while the remaining 13 have seen their sentences reduced to shorter periods.

The Governor expressed optimism that those benefiting from this act of clemency would seize the opportunity for a fresh start and choose a path of positive change.

In addition to the inmate pardons, Governor Inuwa Yahaya shared plans for the initiation of the second phase of a food palliative program.

This initiative, aimed at mitigating the impact of fuel subsidy removal, is scheduled to commence on January 2. The first phase, initiated in August 2023, targeted 420,000 individuals classified as poor and vulnerable.

The upcoming second phase is set to benefit approximately 90,000 individuals throughout the state.

Governor Yahaya emphasized his commitment to creating an inclusive Gombe State, where no one is left behind.

This vision is reflected in the priorities outlined in the recently approved 2024 budget, which underscores the administration’s dedication to addressing the needs of the entire community.

The Governor is adopting a thorough strategy aimed at not just offering immediate assistance through pardons and relief measures, but also at establishing the groundwork for a fairer and more supportive Gombe State in the years ahead.

This all-encompassing approach encompasses both short-term relief and long-term initiatives, intending to create a lasting positive impact on the community by addressing immediate concerns and fostering a foundation for sustained development and equity.
