Gombe United Relegates from Nigeria Top Tier League

—

Gombe United has been mathematically confirmed as relegated from the first tier of the Nigeria League (NPFL) following another disappointing defeat at their home ground, the Pantami Stadium in Gombe State.

On the 34th matchday, Gombe United faced Sunshine Stars. Goals from Promise Awosanmi and Lucky Nwafor in the early minutes of the first half dented Gombe’s chances of survival. The Ondo-based club snatched a massive 3 points and a clean sheet away from home, a rare feat in the Nigerian League.

After 34 games, the Savannah Scorpions could only amass 25 points, the fewest by any side this season. They conceded the most goals (63) and scored the fewest (19).

Meanwhile, table-toppers Rangers of Enugu earned a point and a clean sheet in Lagos following a barren draw against Sporting Lagos. This terrific effort kept them at the summit of the NPFL, two points above Enyimba FC and Remo Stars, who both won their 34th games.

Surprisingly, with 4 games remaining in the 2023-24 NPFL season, only Enugu Rangers, Enyimba, and Remo Stars are mathematically safe from relegation.
