Gboko residents raise alarm over disappearance of LG chairman

Residents in Gboko, the main town in Benue State’s Gboko Local Government Area, are expressing concern about the whereabouts of their council chairman, Abraham Agber.

According to them, the caretaker chairman went missing last Friday after being taken away by men in police uniforms from the hotel where he was staying.

A resident, speaking anonymously, revealed that the community, along with friends and family, is puzzled as they haven’t received any updates on the council chairman’s situation since his apparent abduction.

The resident alleged that the speaker of the state assembly, Dajoh Hyacinth, was involved in the chairman’s arrest.

In response, Speaker Dajoh Hyacinth confirmed on Tuesday that the council chairman was indeed arrested at the force headquarters in Abuja.

However, he denied any personal involvement in the arrest, stating that he lacked the authority to order the council chairman’s arrest.

The speaker explained that intelligence information linked the chairman to a plot against him.

Hyacinth clarified, “There is a sitting governor and an acting (deputy) governor, so does the speaker have the power to arrest the council chairman without the governor giving the order?”

He further revealed that there had been intelligence from the force headquarters indicating a threat to his life, leading to the decision to apprehend the council chairman.

The speaker mentioned a conversation between the chairman and someone else, with the Inspector General of Police (IG) informing the governor of the situation in the state.

Hyacinth emphasized, “It’s established, and I was informed of what was happening around me.

They would have done it without me knowing. Even the Commissioner of Police called me to provide more men, but I said I am okay with the ones I have.”

The speaker added that he had been invited to Abuja for questioning and would be going on Thursday, as instructed.
