Gavel Falls Silent as Rivers High Court Begins Annual Break

The Rivers State High Court will draw the curtains on its judicial sittings for the annual vacation beginning July 20, with regular court activities scheduled to resume on Sept. 16.

The announcement was made by the Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Chibuzor-Amadi, in a statement released on Tuesday in Port Harcourt by the Chief Registrar of the court, Mr. David Ihua-Maduenyi.

Justice Chibuzor-Amadi explained that the annual recess is in accordance with Order 49, Rule 4(D) of the High Court of Rivers State Civil Procedure Rules, 2023 (as amended).

As part of the arrangement, all judicial divisions of the Rivers State High Court across the state will temporarily shut their doors during the vacation period.

“Annual court vacation is a routine judicial exercise designed to provide judges with a recess after a year of judicial duties,” he said.

Despite the break, the chief judge assured litigants that the wheels of justice would not grind to a halt, noting that measures had been put in place to cater to urgent and time-sensitive cases.

According to him, designated vacation judges appointed by the chief judge will sit throughout the recess to entertain urgent applications and matters requiring immediate judicial attention.

He stated that the measure was designed to ensure that deserving cases are not left in limbo and that access to justice remains open where swift intervention is required.

The annual vacation remains a longstanding judicial practice aimed at allowing judges a period of rest while supporting the effective and efficient administration of justice.
