At least four persons have been confirmed dead after a Golf Wagon vehicle plunged into Tomas Dam in Danbatta Local Government Area of Kano State on Tuesday evening.
The incident, which involved 10 passengers, occurred around 7:10 p.m. while the vehicle was travelling from Kano to Roni in Jigawa State.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Kano State Fire Service spokesperson, ACFO Saminu Abdullahi, said firefighters from the Danbatta Fire Station responded swiftly after receiving a distress call from a resident identified as Suleman.
According to the agency, emergency responders successfully rescued all victims from the dam, but four of them were later confirmed dead after being pulled out unconscious.
The deceased were identified as Shamsiya Miko, aged about 35, and Fatima Danlami, aged about 40, while two other victims remain unidentified.
Preliminary investigations revealed that a burst tyre likely caused the vehicle to lose control and crash into the dam.
The victims were evacuated to Danbatta General Hospital for treatment and other necessary procedures.
Reacting to the tragedy, Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Sani Anas, urged motorists to drive responsibly and called for urgent repairs of the Tomas Dam embankment to prevent similar incidents.
