Four Dead, One Injured in Early-Morning Ogun Crash

A routine journey turned deadly in the early hours of Wednesday when a Mitsubishi Canter slammed into a moving truck while attempting to overtake along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, leaving four people dead and another injured.

The crash occurred at about 4 a.m. near Straight Gate School, Ipara Remo, Ogun State, involving a blue Mitsubishi Canter with registration number FGE 753 XA and an ash-coloured HOWO truck with registration number T-695 KT.

The Federal Road Safety Corps attributed the crash to speed violation and wrongful overtaking, while fatigue was also identified as a contributing factor.

According to the FRSC, the Mitsubishi driver was travelling at high speed when he attempted to overtake the moving truck and rammed into it.

The spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command, Chief Route Commander Afolabi Odunsi, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists on Wednesday.

Odunsi said eight people were involved in the crash, with four male adults killed, one male adult injured and three others escaping unhurt.

He said, “Preliminary investigation indicates that the crash was caused by speed violation (SPV) and wrong overtaking (WOV). The Mitsubishi driver, reportedly travelling at high speed, rammed into the moving truck while attempting to overtake.

“Fatigue was also identified as a contributing factor, as the driver was reportedly fatigued during the journey.”

The FRSC said its rescue team received the report at 4:33 a.m. and arrived at the scene six minutes later, at 4:39 a.m.

Odunsi said the injured victim was taken to Victory Hospital, Ogere, for medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the FOS Mortuary, Ipara.

He added that the damaged vehicles were handed over to the Police Motor Traffic Division, Isara Division, for further investigation and necessary action.
