Former Samsung Executive Detained Over New Allegations of Chip Technology Theft

—

Choi Jinseog, a former executive at Samsung Electronics, has been detained again following fresh allegations related to the theft of advanced chip processing technology.

The Seoul Central District Court issued the detention warrant, citing concerns that Choi posed a flight risk.

Choi was already involved in an industrial espionage trial that began in July 2023, where he was accused of stealing semiconductor information from Samsung in an attempt to establish a similar chip manufacturing plant in China.

The latest accusations involve the theft of 20-nanometre DRAM chip processing technology, though Choi has denied the charges, insisting the information is publicly accessible.

Although Choi was released on bail in November 2023, he has not yet been formally charged over the new allegations.

Samsung has declined to comment on the case, while Choi’s lawyer continues to assert his client’s innocence.

This case shows South Korea’s ongoing efforts to protect its cutting-edge technologies and prevent industrial espionage, particularly in light of China’s growing advancements in chip manufacturing.
