Foreign Army chiefs in Nigeria as COAS seeks stronger military cooperation

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has called for stronger military cooperation to address evolving security threats confronting Africa and the global community.

This is contained in a statement by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Col. Appolonia Anele, on Friday in Abuja.

Anele explained Shaibu made the call while hosting Chiefs of Army and senior military leaders from Africa and other parts of the world in Port Harcourt.

The cocktail reception formed part of activities marking the 163rd Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL 2026).

Welcoming the guests, the COAS described the anniversary as a strategic platform for strengthening military diplomacy and professional engagement among partner armies.

He said the gathering would promote the exchange of operational experiences and deepen mutual understanding in tackling contemporary security challenges.

Shaibu observed that armed forces worldwide continued to confront evolving and transnational threats requiring closer collaboration and knowledge sharing.

According to him, enhanced interoperability among partner militaries remains essential for improving collective security and operational effectiveness.

The COAS said partnerships built on trust and shared professional values were critical to safeguarding regional and global peace.

He reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to strengthening strategic partnerships and advancing international military cooperation.

The event attracted senior military leaders from different countries in a demonstration of enduring friendship and professional solidarity.

Anele said the reception underscored the Nigerian Army’s resolve to deepen defence cooperation and promote collective efforts towards national, regional and global security.
