Foreign Affairs Minister Tuggar Resigns to Pursue Bauchi Governorship Bid

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has resigned from the cabinet of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to pursue his governorship ambition in Bauchi State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The development was confirmed on Monday by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa. Reports indicate that Tuggar submitted his resignation letter shortly after noon.

Sources revealed that the former minister intends to contest the governorship election under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Tuggar’s decision follows a presidential directive issued earlier in March, requiring political appointees seeking elective offices to step down. The directive was conveyed through the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.

Affected officials were mandated to resign on or before March 31, 2026. The directive covers ministers, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants, personal assistants, and heads of federal agencies.

The policy aligns with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act 2026, aimed at preventing conflicts of interest as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
