A fatal accident early Saturday morning claimed the lives of five people on the Lapai–Suleja Road, while 34 others are being treated at the Lapai General Hospital.
The crash happened around 4:30 a.m. and involved passengers traveling from Kano and Maiduguri to Lagos.
According to a survivor, the accident occurred when a container truck suddenly swerved into their lane.
Their driver tried to avoid hitting the truck but lost control of the vehicle, causing the crash. The truck driver fled the scene.
Mallam Salisu Suleiman, Chairman of the Hausa Community in Lapai, told Newsmen that accidents on the route are becoming more frequent.
He urged travelers to avoid night journeys and warned against using lorries for long-distance passenger travel, saying such practices increase the risk of accidents.
Medical staff at the Lapai General Hospital are continuing to care for the injured as authorities work to handle the situation.
