A fire outbreak has destroyed more than 100 thatched houses at the Water Board Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp in Monguno Local Government Area of Borno State.
The Borno State Police Command confirmed the incident on Saturday through its Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahun Daso, in a statement obtained by The News Chronicle in Maiduguri.
According to Daso, the fire occurred on Friday at about 4:30 p.m. and was reported at the Monguno Police Station by the camp chairman, Bukar Mbati.
“The fire engulfed over 100 thatched houses, destroying foodstuff and other household items in the raging inferno,” he said.
He explained that personnel of the Borno State Fire Service, alongside police officers and other security agencies stationed at the camp, swiftly responded and brought the fire under control.
Daso added that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Monguno, Superintendent of Police, led a patrol team to the scene to conduct an on-the-spot assessment, while photographs of the incident were taken for documentation.
“Thankfully, no life was lost and no injury was recorded. The value of the properties destroyed is yet to be ascertained,” he said.
He further stated that investigations were ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.
