A devastating fire has destroyed a major home and office furnishings market located along Murtala Mohammed Road in Kano State, razing the entire market and causing losses estimated at millions of naira.
The News Chronicle gathered that the fire broke out at about 10:00 p.m. on Thursday and was still raging as of the time of filing this report.
A trader at the market told reporters that the blaze completely engulfed the market, leaving shop owners counting huge losses. He said the cause of the fire had yet to be determined.
According to him, traders could only watch in despair while personnel of the State Fire Service battled to contain the inferno.
He added that the fire spread to the nearby DHL building, damaging and burning part of its roof.
The market, situated between the DHL office and an FCMB branch on Murtala Mohammed Road, has served residents for more than three decades.
It is known for the sale of household and office furnishings, including sofas, chairs, carpets, air conditioners, mattresses, refrigerators, televisions, and other decorative items.
Authorities are yet to ascertain the exact cause of the incident as firefighters continue efforts to bring the situation under control.
