Freshly revealed FIFA documents have raised new questions over DR Congo’s eligibility during the 2026 World Cup African playoff, with reports indicating that goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi’s international switch had not been fully completed when he represented the country against Nigeria.
According to reports by The New York Times and Le Monde, FIFA lawyers became aware of the issue in March and reportedly recommended possible sanctions, including disqualifying DR Congo from its subsequent intercontinental playoff against Jamaica and banning Mpasi.
No action was taken, however, and Mpasi later featured against Jamaica and at the World Cup.
The News Chronicle reports that the revelations could strengthen Nigeria’s case after the Nigeria Football Federation challenged DR Congo’s use of allegedly ineligible players. The Court of Arbitration for Sport had previously dismissed Nigeria’s petition.
The NFF is considering asking FIFA for compensation for the financial and sporting losses suffered as a result of Nigeria’s elimination.
Nigeria was guaranteed at least $12.5 million for qualifying for the World Cup and could have earned $18.5 million by reaching the second round.
The Super Eagles lose to DR Congo 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw after extra time in the African playoff final.
