The Federal Government has rolled out a new chicken breed alongside 57 improved crop varieties as part of efforts to boost food production and improve nutrition across the country.
Officials confirmed approval of the new additions at a stakeholders’ meeting in Ibadan, following a thorough examination by the relevant technical committees. The project hopes to provide farmers with more resilient and higher-yielding alternatives suitable to the Nigerian environment.
The newly presented crop types include important staples, such as maize, rice, yams, soybeans, tomatoes, peppers, and groundnuts. Many of them are developed for early maturity, better pest resistance, and tolerance to a changing climate. Higher meat yield and improved tolerance to heat stress are anticipated from the new chicken variety known as Moorbeta.
As authorities advocate for greater agricultural resilience and productivity across the country, The News Chronicle gathered that this development is one component of a larger plan to address growing food poverty.
According to experts, the success of the project would largely depend on how quickly farmers adopt the new varieties and how effectively extension services facilitate distribution and raise awareness.
The move builds on previous interventions by the government to enhance food systems, with a growing focus on innovation, local research partnerships, and improved farming inputs to drive sustainable agricultural growth.
