FG to establish a natural gas park at Ajaokuta Steel Company

Ajaokuta Steel Company in Kogi will soon have a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) park, according to proposals released by the federal government.

The revelation was made on Monday in Abuja by Prince Shuaibu Audu, the Minister of Steel Development, in a statement released by his media assistant, Lizzy Okoji.

According to the minister, this program is part of the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which seeks to lessen the suffering of Nigerians and support the global energy transition.

“This demonstrates the president’s commitments to alleviate citizens’ plights resulting from the removal of fuel subsidies.”

“And to transition with the rest of the world to more economical, sustainable, and environmentally friendly energy sources.”

“The Ministry of Steel Development has plans for a proposed CNG park within the territories of the Ajaokuta Steel Company Ltd (ASCL) as stakeholders in P-CNGi.”

“Existing infrastructure, such as the Metallurgical Training Center and the natural gas line from Warri to Ajaokuta, will benefit the CNG Park to be located in ASCL.”

“Among other amenities, the 10,000 housing estates in the Ajaokuta environs and the engineering workshops,” he stated.

A Few Things to Know About CNG

Methane makes up the majority of compressed natural gas (CNG), which is used as an alternative fuel for automobiles.

Less than 1% of its volume is compressed when it is subjected to typical air pressure.

As part of his palliative intervention to lessen the hardships suffered by Nigerians, President Bola Tinubu sanctioned the creation of the Presidential CNG Initiative (Pi-CNG) in August 2023, following the elimination of gasoline subsidies.

With the deployment of nearly 11,500 new CNG-enabled vehicles and the provision of 55,000 conversion kits for current PMS-dependent vehicles, the program seeks to revolutionize transportation.

By using CNG-powered vehicles, it is also committed to lowering Nigeria’s dependency on fossil fuels and actively promoting a healthier and cleaner environment.
