FG to Boost Digital Connectivity with $2 Billion Investment

—

The Federal Government is set to invest $2 billion in a major project aimed at extending Nigeria’s fibre optic network.

This initiative will increase the country’s fibre optic cable capacity from 35,000 kilometers to 125,000 kilometers, enhancing the terrestrial fibre optic backbone.

During a visit to the vandalized Digital Innovation Park in Kano, Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy Bosun Tijani announced the plans.

The park had been damaged during protests in August.

This investment aims to provide improved connectivity to communities, enabling schools, hospitals, government offices, and businesses to operate more efficiently in a digital environment.

Tijani also highlighted the importance of this project for fostering growth in various sectors, including education, healthcare, and agriculture.

The Ministry is working closely with the Kano State Government and private infrastructure companies to encourage investment in the region’s digital economy.

This collaboration seeks to connect vital institutions and help Kano evolve into a digital hub.

With a dynamic and growing workforce, Nigeria has the potential to become a significant player in the global technology landscape.

The minister pointed out that many countries face declining populations, while Nigeria’s youth can drive innovation and local industry growth.

The government’s Three Million Technical Talent (3MTT) initiative is designed to develop digital and technical skills among three million Nigerians, addressing the increasing demand for skilled professionals in areas like software development, data science, and cybersecurity.

Currently, over 300 young individuals in Kano are participating in this programme, positioning them as the future of Nigeria’s digital workforce.

Regarding the Digital Innovation Park, IHS Towers has committed to supporting its refurbishment, reinforcing the shared ambition of Kano and Nigeria to lead in the global digital economy.
