FG Rules Out 100% Telecom Tariff Hike

The Federal Government has rejected telecom operators’ request for a 100% increase in service tariffs.

This follows complaints from service providers about rising costs caused by inflation, currency devaluation, and higher operational expenses.

Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, clarified during an interview on Channels Television that while a tariff review is necessary, a full 100% hike would negatively impact citizens.

Instead, he proposed a possible increase of 30% to 60%.

“We have made it clear that a 100% increase is off the table,” Tijani stated. “While the companies argue this is essential for sector stability, we believe it would harm consumers.”

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is currently evaluating the situation to find a balance between industry sustainability and consumer affordability.

Meanwhile, MTN Nigeria’s CEO, Karl Toriola, explained that telecom operators unanimously favor a 100% hike to address economic challenges.

However, he expressed confidence in a phased adjustment that could support the sector’s stability without overwhelming consumers.
