FG Rejects NLC’s N615,000 Demand, Lionel Messi Makes History with 1,200th Goal Assist in MLS Match – Trending Today

1. Negotiations for a new minimum wage have hit an impasse as the Federal Government and organized labor fail to agree on a figure. President Bola Tinubu indicated this during the International Workers’ Day celebration in Abuja. The President’s adviser, Bayo Onanuga, criticized labor’s insistence on a N615,000 minimum wage, stating that no agreement has been reached on the amount. On the other hand, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, defended the demand, asserting that it’s necessary to prevent worker impoverishment. Despite the stalemate, Tinubu assured workers of a fair living wage and pledged to resolve the issue soon. Meanwhile, the Presidency faulted the NLC’s demand, citing the government’s inability to pay such an amount. Negotiations remain ongoing, with labor proposing N615,000 while the government suggests between N60,000 and N70,000.

2. The Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, revealed that 86 apartments were discovered under the Dolphin Estate Bridge in Ikoyi, where tenants paid N250,000 annual rent. Posting videos on his X account, Wahab stated that the enforcement team had removed all structures, including a container used for illegal activities, from beneath the bridge. Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Kunle Rotimi-Akodu, confirmed the eviction, noting that 23 individuals were arrested during the operation. The bridge housed 86 rooms partitioned into 10×10 and 12×10, with squatters paying an average rent of N250,000 per annum. Rotimi-Akodu emphasized the importance of removing the settlements due to safety concerns, including the use of gas cylinders and fuel storage.

3. The Federal Government has initiated a 15-day emergency fuel supply to address the ongoing fuel scarcity across Nigeria. Vessels importing Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) will continue to discharge petrol to depots for distribution to filling stations. The Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria reported receiving 300 million litres of fuel from eight vessels. The government assures that more vessels will arrive in the coming weeks to ensure widespread distribution of PMS.

4. Lionel Messi achieved a record-breaking 1,200 goal assists in the Inter Miami vs New England Revolution match, after scoring two goals which led his team to a 4-1 victory. He also earned the Major League Soccer (MLS) Player of the Match award, matching the record previously held by Luis Suarez, David Beckham, and Landon Donovan. Messi’s presence in the United States also boosted attendance, setting a new record at the Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts.

5. Veteran Nollywood actress, Sola Sobowale, addressed rumors about her alleged arrest for drug trafficking in Saudi Arabia during a live chat on the ‘Teju Baby Face Show’. She recalled facing negative reports when she left Nigeria for the UK, including false stories about her death and involvement in menial jobs like selling food. She debunked the lie that claimed she was killed in Saudi Arabia for drug trafficking, emphasizing that she never even knew where Saudi Arabia was on the map. Sobowale also discussed her hiatus from acting to care for her children, crediting her parents’ upbringing for her commitment to her family. Despite temporarily leaving the acting scene, her children encouraged her to return to her passion, which led to her comeback for the audition of “The Wedding Party” in 2016.

6. Nigerian Afro-singer Burna Boy has set a new record for the highest-grossing venue in the United States by an African artist. His concert at the TD Garden Arena in Boston grossed $1.593 million, surpassing his previous record set at Madison Square Garden in 2022. The feat adds to Burna Boy’s global acclaim. With his Grammy-nominated album ‘African Giant’  and hits like ‘YE’ and ‘On The Low’, he has made significant strides internationally since 2018.

7. Kayode Kasum’s comedy-drama “Ajosepo” has continued to dominate the Nigerian box office, grossing an impressive N136 million in just 21 days of screening. The film maintained its position as the highest-grossing film for three consecutive weeks, according to the Nigerian box office. In a report by CEAN, “Ajosepo” earned N79 million in sales during the week of April 12 to April 18, 2024. The movie, which tells the story of a young couple on the verge of marriage amidst family gatherings and hidden secrets, features notable actors such as Timini Egbuson and Yemi Solade. Directed by Kayode Kasum, known for his previous successes like “Sugar Rush,” “Ajosepo” marks his most successful opening film, grossing N70 million in its debut week. Despite this, “Sugar Rush” remains Kasum’s highest-grossing film to date.
