The Federal Government plans to revamp the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to better align with future needs.
Dr. Jamila Ibrahim, the Minister of Youth Development, made this announcement during the first meeting between NYSC management and heads of institutions producing corps members in Abuja on Monday, 13 May, 2024.
She mentioned that a team would be set up to review and reform the NYSC, focusing on promoting entrepreneurship and skills development.
Additionally, over 5000 corps members will receive funding for their business ventures through the Nigeria Youth Investment Fund program.
“Permit me to inform us very briefly that on what is to come regarding NYSC reforms. I’m pleased to announce that I will be inaugurating a team to undertake the review, restructuring and reforms of the NYSC. The first of this reforms will be centered on reviewing participants with an entrepreneurship mindset and making skills development a core of the programme.”
Brigadier General Yushau’ Ahmed, the Director-General of NYSC, highlighted the aim of the meeting to improve the mobilization process for prospective corps members.
He emphasized the need for deeper involvement of institution leaders to address challenges effectively. Ahmed also stressed NYSC’s commitment to the security and welfare of corps members.
“We have identified some obstacles, including the delegation of roles to subordinates, and we believe that the direct involvement of chief executives of institutions will promote deeper appreciation of issues and ensure desired results.”
Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, representing the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), commended the NYSC management for selecting Abuja as the meeting venue.
He underscored the importance of innovative strategies to overcome challenges and engage young graduates in national development.
Wike applauded NYSC’s efforts to enhance operations through technology and encouraged active participation in the meeting.
“NYSC has consistently symbolised our collective commitment to national development, unity, and integration. We must adopt innovative strategies to surmount challenges and enhance best practices for the engagement of our young graduates in national development efforts.”
