FG, NCC Set For September Launch Of Zero-Rated Data For Education Platforms

The Federal Government has concluded plans with the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, to roll out zero-rated data for educational platforms as part of efforts to expand access to digital learning nationwide.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, disclosed this after receiving the Chairman of the NCC, Idris Olorunnimbe, and his team for a meeting on the initiative.

According to Alausa, the Chairman briefed him on the status of the now-finalised zero-rated data initiative and the proposed launch timeline.

The Minister also demonstrated the Digital National Education Management Information System, D-NEMIS, highlighting the Federal Ministry of Education’s commitment to digital transformation and the use of data to drive evidence-based planning, policy and service delivery.

“Driving education reform requires strong collaboration across government,” Alausa said.

Both parties agreed on a target launch window of early September for the zero-rated data rollout.

The Minister noted that by expanding access to educational platforms while strengthening the digital education ecosystem, the collaboration reflects a One Government approach to delivering the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative, NESRI, and advancing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to build a knowledge-driven economy.

Zero-rated data will enable students and teachers to access approved educational platforms without incurring data charges, a move the government says will reduce cost barriers and boost digital inclusion in schools.
