Nigeria has made a significant stride toward preserving its agricultural exports, partnering with the National Space Research and Development Agency to install satellite systems for crop traceability, farmland monitoring, and global compliance verification.
Formalized via a fresh Memorandum of Understanding, the cooperation aims to support the nation in meeting increasing international standards and safeguard billions of dollars in agricultural export value threatened by more stringent global rules.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, noted that the project represents a turning point for Nigeria’s global food market competitiveness.
The move, he said, shows how determined the government is to safeguard farmers, update value chains, and guarantee that Nigerian products can survive growing foreign regulatory inspection. He repeated that President Bola Tinubu considers agriculture to be critical to restoring economic stability and providing inclusive development.
The News Chronicle gathered that the traceability system will rely heavily on satellite imagery supplied by NASRDA, while the agriculture ministry will coordinate field-level engagement, policy alignment and nationwide rollout.
Officials say the system will allow every agricultural export to be linked to its exact farm boundary and verified as legally produced and free of deforestation activity.
This happens as the government releases the National White Paper on Strategy for European Union Deforestation Regulation Compliance.
With non-compliance endangering over one billion dollars in yearly export revenue and up to three billion dollars in general economic value, the regulations demand that every agricultural cargo satisfy exacting traceability requirements.
Kyari emphasized that the new framework would enable Nigeria to access premium global markets and boost farmer incomes, and that no farmer would be left behind in the change.
Dr. Mathew Adepoju, Director General of NASRDA, vowed complete support for the deployment, noting the agency would provide the required technological foundation to make the system successful.
Emphasising its function in boosting Nigeria’s agricultural future while guaranteeing responsible data use, senior officials, including the Permanent Secretary of the Agriculture Ministry, Dr. Marcus Ogunbiyi, and members of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, also supported the agreement.
The alliance shows the government’s will to meet worldwide norms via creative innovation, thoughtful planning, and technology-driven supervision.
