The government might change its mind about helping with electricity prices because the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, said the power industry owes a lot of money.
This means that the power companies are struggling to get paid. Because of this, there’s been less electricity for homes and businesses.
The government has been unsure about what to do with the power industry for almost ten years.
They keep giving the job to people who don’t know much about how to fix it. Last year, President Bola Tinubu stopped electricity prices from going up, but now the Minister of Power is saying that the prices should go up to cover the costs.
The government had set aside about N450 billion to help pay for electricity in 2024, but the real amount needed might be closer to N2 trillion.
This is way more than what was planned. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) thinks the subsidy should be around N1.6 trillion.
The Minister also talked about how the value of Nigeria’s money has gone down, which has made it hard to finish projects in the power industry.
He said that more than 100 projects run by the Transmission Company of Nigeria are left unfinished because of this. They won’t start new projects until the old ones are done.
He also explained why the power grid keeps failing. There’s not enough gas, the machines are old, there’s not enough ways to move the power around, and some power stations have been damaged. These problems are making the power crisis worse.
