FG Moves To End Gridlock In Mararaba-Keffi Road, Begins Dual Carriage Way In February

Minister of Works David Umahi has requested a redesign of the Abuja-Keffi Expressway, specifically adding a flyover, in order to alleviate the frequent traffic congestion on the Nyanya-Mararaba axis in Karu, Nasarawa state.

The minister made this known during a site inspection of the ongoing reconstruction and rehabilitation of the Abuja-Mararaba-Keffi Road.

The project is expected to be undertaken by China Harbour Engineering Company Limited as part of the Road Infrastructure Development and Refurbishment Investment Tax Credit Scheme.

Umahi charged the company to produce the redesigned plans within seven days, stressing that it would effectively reduce the traffic gridlock on the road.

He confirmed that the road, spanning 43.56km, will become a tolled dual carriageway upon completion, featuring various amenities to enhance the travel experience. Umahi also instructed the project director to liaise with the Nasarawa state governor to acquire land for service stations and toll gates along the road.

He assured that the redesign will be completed promptly, using construction materials that will strengthen the road’s foundation and asphalt.

The former governor of Ebonyi state further stated that the project, funded by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), will have two construction sites, with nighttime work to minimize disruption to traffic flow. Additionally, he disclosed plans to consider the construction of a flyover in Mararaba, which is a highly congested area. A design proposal for the flyover is expected within seven days, with construction scheduled to begin before mid-February.

The project was awarded on April 19, 2023, commenced on December 20, 2023, and is slated for completion in May 2026.
