President Tinubu has taken a decisive step towards enhancing Nigeria’s primary healthcare infrastructure and service delivery by approving the establishment of the National Health Fellows Programme.
This initiative aims to engage young Nigerian fellows across all 774 local government areas to monitor and track the development and performance of primary healthcare centers.
A Presidential statement said the selected fellows, trained to high standards, will act as fiduciary agents responsible for assessing the progress of Primary Healthcare Centre development and performance. Their work will involve meticulous measurement against all financial allocations to these centers nationwide.
This fellowship program will operate under the Sector Wide Approach (SWAp) coordination office within the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare. Fellows will be recruited, compensated appropriately, and equipped with the necessary tools to effectively monitor the performance of Basic Health Care Provision Fund-supported health facilities across the nation.
President Tinubu, serving as the African Union Champion for Human Resources in Healthcare, has placed his confidence in the capabilities of young Nigerians. He envisions their involvement in this crucial nation-building endeavor, which includes daily monitoring and tracking of health reforms in their respective areas, as a catalyst for ushering in a new era of world-class healthcare service provision accessible to all Nigerians nationwide.
